Sealants are an excellent way to help reduce the incidence of decay in young teeth. By sealing off the deep grooves and fissures on the chewing surfaces of the teeth, we prevent the invasion of bacteria and sugars in the areas beyond the reach of the toothbrush. When done properly, sealants can significantly reduce cavities.
However, over many years we actually reduced our recommendation of these procedures because of our inability to catch cavities in their earliest stages. The old way of detecting cavities, using a dental explorer, only catches 24 percent of cavities before they perforate the enamel. Sealing over these undetected cavities allows them to grow and become huge.
Laser Cavity Detection
With our new laser detection system, Diagnodent, we can safely and accurately confirm the tooth is decay-free and a good candidate for a sealant. At the same time, it allows us to confirm the presence of cavities earlier than ever before and allows us to treat them with very conservative fillings.
