CEREC Crowns

CEREC Crowns: Porcelain Restorations in a Single Appointment

The beauty, strength, and health of your teeth can be dramatically improved using restorative techniques such as CEREC porcelain, an advanced technique few other Grandville dentists have the ability to offer.

What is CEREC?

CEREC refers to a computer-assisted design and milling system that crafts precise porcelain crowns and onlays in just one visit, with less drilling and grinding than typical restorations. The beauty of CEREC is that it is stronger, more natural-looking and more convenient than tooth restorations of the past.

CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramic. As the name implies, these restorations offer the most conservative, lifelike, and convenient restorations available in dentistry today.

When I first heard of this concept I laughed. How could a camera measure a tooth 3-dimensionally and then design and mill a restoration with the accuracy of a high-quality lab? I now know that CEREC can do it even better and stronger than a lab!

In 1998, Northway Family Dentistry was the first office to implement this amazing technology in West Michigan. For years our office was employed to demonstrate and educate local dentists on CEREC. We have since placed more than 6,000 restorations with a success rate equal to that of gold crowns (the previous “gold” standard).

Because there is less drilling and the tooth is repaired immediately with no leaky temporary, CEREC restorations are the least damaging and most comfortable restorations available today. We have noticed a 75 percent reduction in the need for root canals after treatment versus full-coverage crowns. A study by Dr. Gordon Christiansen, a leading dental researcher and long-time editorialist for the Journal of the American Dental Association, compared 15 restorative materials for post-treatment sensitivity and rated CEREC the most comfortable.

Benefits of CEREC

  • Conservative and durable: porcelain can reinforce the tooth to its original strength and it can allow us to catch future problems earlier.
  • Convenient and comfortable: patients appreciate fewer appointments, fewer shots, less drilling, and no impressions or temporaries. They also result in the least damage!
  • Aesthetically pleasing and natural looking: they require no metal reinforcement so they look more natural.
